Surewest Video / Phone Service – Q&A

  1. Why can SureWest come in and disrupt my property? A utility has the right to maintain and install their utility in the City right-of-way and utility easements. A homeowner has to provide them reasonable access to those easements to maintain/install their equipment. Public right-of-ways are dedicated for vehicular, pedestrian, and public use.
  2. Why did the City allow SureWest to use the public right-of-way and easements? A City could deny a utility’s access to the public right-of-way for reasonable public health, safety and welfare. The City may exercise its home rule powers for the administration, regulation and management of the public right-of-way; however this must be competitively neutral and may not be unreasonable or discriminatory. Creation of a Task Force for Residential Retrofit for Energy Efficiency

Roeland Park, in partnership with HistoricGreen (www.HistoricGreen.org), will be conducting a Residential Retrofit project this fall. This project will utilize volunteers to retrofit five Roeland Park homes with energy efficiency and water conservation features, thanks to a grant from the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC). Roeland Park is forming a task force to plan the project. All skill sets are welcome, from fundraising to event planning to home improvement skills. Please contact Aaron Otto (aotto@roelandpark.org) to receive more information on the task force, and be sure to check the City’s website latter this summer for more information on volunteering at the event or attending the Service Learning workshops.
