Roeland Park City Council Approves Pay Increase for Lifeguards

Recruitment and retention bonuses available

Roeland Park, KAN. (May 5, 2021) - The City of Roeland Park is excited to announce that the Roeland Park Governing Body has approved a pay increase for lifeguards to $12 an hour. This is a 20 percent increase from the previous hourly rate of $10. The Governing Body made the decision to increase the hourly rate to ensure enough staff was on board to meet the public's demand for the pool this summer.

“We just completed the final tasks to the The Roeland Park Aquatic Center, a $1.6 million Capital Improvement Project,” said Tony Nichols, Roeland Park Superintendent of Parks and Recreation. “We will have many new features for swimmers this summer including new slides, new shade structures, a climbing wall, a splash pad and more. We are hoping this pay increase helps attract the staff we need to support swimmer demand!”

Lifeguard positions do not require experience and hires will receive their certification free of charge. Applicants can apply on the City’s website here. Please contact Nichols with questions at

There is currently a city-wide shortage of lifeguards due to job competition as well as lost talent from being closed last year due to the pandemic. Roeland Park’s pay increase makes it one of the best paying lifeguard jobs in the Kansas City area. It’s recruitment bonus is also available to those staff who bring in potential candidates that the City hires and retention bonuses will be offered later on in the season.
